Orchids in Sepia

“Each of us chooses the tone for telling his or her own story. I would like to choose the durable clarity of a platinum print, but nothing in my destiny possesses the luminosity. I live among diffuse shadings, veiled mysteries, uncertainties; the tone of telling my life is closer to that of a portrait in sepia.” Portrait in Sepia by Isabel Allende

One of the reasons why I love shooting with my lens wide open (i.e. shallow depth of field, i.e. blurry background) is because how creamy and dreamlike it makes the photo. A lot of times when I shoot this way, I pay attention more to the way the shadows, lights and colors diffuse in the background than to the clarity of the subject itself! This can become a problem when making portraits of human subjects though... oops. In all honesty though, I feel that although the background needs to create its own visual interest, it should be subtle enough to not take the main focus away from the subject, but dynamic enough to create energy between it and the subject.

 Happy Friday everyone! =)
